July Outlook: Uruguay
By Kristel Latecki / Piiila
this july Piiila received its 5 years renewing its logo and graphics, but also with a schedule of news that will last until the end of the year: Fiestas, a live podcast series (the episode with Luciano Supervielle can now be seen listen here) and a festival, will be what we prepare to celebrate an important milestone for an independent and self-managed media.
And as every month the celebration continues in this space, we recommend some of the many Uruguayan releases that took place these days.
Rodra and Diego Morales – Among the embers: in 2021 Rodra and Diego Morales received one of the National Music Awards, an award granted by the Ministry of Education and Culture to unpublished works. That was between the embers, an excellent union of the candombe tradition with trap, the warm touch of the drum with darkness and electronic logic. He already showed it on his debut album: Rodra has a lot to offer, from his vocal performance to the creativity of his compositions. And this song reaffirms it.
Honey - Sunday: Defined as a "fine balance between mystery and swing" Sunday is the first single from the rapper's next album Honey. Produced by the Argentine 21st floor, east track wraps and transports like a free fall in slow motion, with the lethargy of any given Sunday. It came out accompanied by a video created by Valentina Leoncini that channels the dreamlike quality and cadence of the song.
Partner - New Cars: The last album of Partner ⸺the band led by one of the most recognized and recognizable voices of contemporary Uruguayan music, Fede Lima⸺, was Mini Glories 2015. But now the band came back strong, first with a single beside Thedy Corrêa of Nenhum de Nós and now with New Cars. It is a forceful and dark theme, which narrates the differences, the difficulties and the frustrations that money brings. In addition, they pay tribute to The man on the street, anthem by Jaime Roos.
Agustin Casulo – The plan: singer and producer Augustine Casulo is preparing everything for the release of his fourth album, Pop Champagne, produced together with Santi Marrero and with guests like Eros White, louis angelero and Zeballos. In The plan Agustín appears alone, reflecting or rather opening the door of his thoughts, his insecurities and the doubts generated by this industry. It will not have a plan, but it will have a resounding statement for a country so ruled by rock: "I continue with my dreams ahead / I have pop as my flag".
Holiday- The sun will look at us Holiday is the new pseudonym of Leandro Mangado, a musician and illustrator who passed through and integrates bands like Vincent Vega, Los Paisajes and The Supersonicos, and with whom he signs the new single The Sun Will Watch Us. Reverberant guitars, a rhythm machine, vocal harmonies and an eighties keyboard are the elements that together manage to connect, with the sound and atmosphere of his previous projects, with something new and interesting, which he hopes to develop in future works.
