24 artists to follow in 2024
From the different points of Ibero-America that this FARO illuminates, we have a privileged view to observe the different musical scenes that are born in every corner, and a keen eye to find the artists that stand out from the noise and offer new and interesting proposals.
For this reason, and after having closed 2023 celebrating the highlights of the year, we begin this year looking to the future. We present here a selection of 24 artists -some emerging, others with some releases already in the air-, who are ready to take off. These are our bets that are sure to dazzle, thrill and move this 2024.
ARGENTINA
By indie today
In a world where music seems to be the only constant, it's easy to get lost among the plethora of new artists and albums being born every day. As for what's happening in Argentina, the scene is more vibrant than ever and 2024 promises to bear good fruit. From alternative rock to folk fusion, Argentine music offers a range of proposals that capture the very essence of our broad and distorted culture. For this reason, in indie today we highlight three emerging projects not to be missed this year.
Good Vampires
Post punk and dark wave made in Mar del Plata, Buenos Vampiros achieves a perfect balance between energy and melancholy. Their distorted guitars create a dense and emotionally charged atmosphere. Their lyrics, deep and poetic, explore themes such as loneliness, death, love and disillusionment. The danceable rhythms, although sometimes frenetic, are mixed with moments of calm and contemplation. It is a sound that grabs you and transports you to a world where darkness and beauty are indissolubly mixed. The quartet is already working on their third album, due in 2024. The successor to Destroy! (2022) promises to be even more ambitious and incendiary, consolidating Buenos Vampiros as one of the most relevant bands of the under national.
Juana Aguirre
With his captivating solo debut Chiaroscuro (2021), Juana Aguirre proved to be a force of innovation in the Argentine scene. Her style fuses elements of folk, experimental music and Latin American tradition, creating a richly nuanced sonic experience. His ability to incorporate diverse instrumentation embraces everything from acoustic guitars to subtle electronic elements. This eclectic approach allows the singer-songwriter to transcend the boundaries of conventional genres, creating a distinctive and endearing sound. With a warm and evocative voice, Aguirre weaves thought-provoking soundscapes with lyrics about love, nature and spirituality. Following her latest single titled lo_divinoWe can expect Juana to continue to surprise us in 2024.
End of the world
No one can overlook the Fin del Mundo. This post rock band and shoegaze based in Buenos Aires but with roots in Argentine Patagonia, forges a sonic portal that invites to an introspective journey through ethereal landscapes and hypnotic textures. With a strong emphasis on instrumentation, the band unveils an explosion of noise and energy over a short, but extremely intense discography. Their leap in popularity in recent times and their extensive European tours are due to their powerful live shows, as evidenced by the session they did for KEXP, Seattle's legendary independent radio station. Recorded in September 2022 as part of the KEXP Live from Argentina initiative, the session features five songs that encapsulate the essence of the band's sound. A more than ideal way to enter the Fin del Mundo universe.
BRAZIL
By Scream & Yell
In a highly saturated scenario, with dozens of singlesWith music videos and albums flooding emails every week, choosing three favorites can be both a shot in the dark and a wasted opportunity. That's why this editorial has chosen to shine a light on three projects that do not yet enjoy national recognition, but have as much potential to reach a wider audience in Brazil as they do to cross borders and engage in a dialogue with you, who are reading this, wherever you are on this blue planet. That is why we have chosen these three artists:
Jambu
From Manaus, in the middle of the Amazon jungle, the group Jambu begins a new stage in their career with the video clip (shot in Rio de Janeiro) of single Slowlyreleased in early 2024. Their debut album was released in 2023, but this new material is more pop, soft and danceable. Guitarist and vocalist Gabriel Mar explains the band's momentum: "We thought about how to rebuild novelty over rock and there is a similarity in the guitar with the warmer and more danceable style of the guitarradas of Amazonas and or Calypso, in Pará, which help build a cheerful and danceable atmosphere at the same time".
Lencinho
Vitor Brauer is a very active name on the scene. underground Brazilian, both as leader of Lupe de Lupe, the schizo-punk combo responsible for memorable shows and albums, and as a solo artist. In early 2024, however, Vitor surprised everyone with his new project with Pedro Millecco (Trash No Star) plus Bernardo Cunha, Gabriel Otero and Fábio Baltar (all three from Tom Gangue): Lencinho, a nineties pagode band! Inspired by samba and romantic pagode (with an undeniable indie accent, both in production and lyrics), Vitor and his friends have produced an album that oozes cynicism and honesty, and that, if taken a little seriously, could go much further than the official projects of those involved.
Sophia Chablau And An Enormous Loss of Time
Sophia Chablau e Uma Enorme Perda de Tempo, a quartet from São Paulo that released their second album last year, the highly praised Music of the EsquecimentoThey are still a cult band in Brazil: they manage to sell out their concerts in the city with a dedicated fan club, they opened the hot second day of Primavera Sound 2023 in São Paulo and are scheduled for the Catalan version of the Spanish festival, but they continue to sound like a secret shared by word of mouth among lovers of good music. They are living that moment where they could become a much better known band overnight, and if that happens, you've seen them before here at Alianza Faro.
CHILE
By POTQ Magazine
Not so, so new, not so, so well known (yet). So are these three Chilean artists' proposals that we want to observe closely this year at POTQ Magazine. Three very different names but which, we believe, are united by something essential: their own identity. Something refreshing in the midst of a major cultural crisis: an independent circuit that lacks everything, including a network of venues to hold concerts in good conditions both in the capital and throughout the country, as well as the latent danger of thinking that by standardizing their proposals they can get some crumb of the small, small mainstream. When there is nothing to lose and the only thing left to do is to build what we see destroyed, the first stone of the new foundation is fidelity to oneself.
SINAKA
In this part of the world we are obsessed with the reggaeton movement of the 2000s, popularly known as "reguetón del viejito" (old man reggaeton). In the midst of the trap and hyper-urban explosion, Sinaka, a native of the Valparaíso Region, is beginning to gain attention after the release of Kemaan album of 10 tracks where he manages to fuse sounds ranging from what El General and Plan B did, to the ATR cumbia of Argentina. We have no doubt that in 2024 he will enter the golden circle of perreo exponents, accompanied by a career consisting of two more full-lengths: W.A.N Vol. 1 and MOJAfrom last year.
Antumalen Island
Marijuana, romance, ancestors, pachamama, all in mapudungún. Antumalen Antillanca is the woman behind Isleña Antumalen, a project active since 2020 where the rapper, poet and singer achieves an interesting mix between her Mapuche cosmovision and the most current rap. If during the 2023 she had steps for spaces such as the Ibero-American Meeting of Women in the Music Industry, Valdivia Fluvial Festival and the International Indigenous Summit Music in Canada, we are sure that this 2024 she will expand her audience with a debut album and a bet as urgent as fresh.
Kuina
At a time when many artists' careers in what was once called the urban genre are beginning to standardize lyrically, aesthetically, production-wise, and promotion-wise, in order to fit into the mainstream spaces, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find the right artist for the job. mainstreamKuina delivers what is essential in any artistic proposal: her own personality, playfulness and infinite curiosity. Leonora Tonini is 21 years old and was born more than 600 km south of Santiago, in Lautaro. In just a couple of years, she has already published several singles and two EPs that have characterized her for being a very well kept secret, but this is her year for many more people to be lucky enough to hear her, we are sure. In Kuina there is vision, a powerful lyricist, a curious and unprejudiced music with genres, a personality hungry not only for the success of the listens or viewings of her careful and fun video clips. You can feel the hunger of an artist in construction who gobbles up -with grace and a lot of charisma- everything in her path, in order to be what she wants to be, without existing as a convenient clone of someone else. It just makes you want to see what she's going to deliver.
COLOMBIA
By shock
Every time a new year begins in shock we make a special content special with musical bets: artists that, we believe, will begin to raise their heads above "the emerging". This 2024 we selected 14. Most of them have very different styles. There is reggaeton, R&B, rap, plug, glitch, techno and many singer-songwriters. Here you can find them all. This selection of three is, perhaps, the one that best represents the novelties in the independent sound.
Mayra Sanchez
Mayra Sánchez is one of the emerging Colombian artists who is making her way in R&B with a Caribbean sound that is in her blood: although she grew up in the city of Cali, her parents are Cuban and it was the music of the island that marked her style. He debuted in 2020 and since then he has released almost a dozen singles in which he also plays with bachata, despecho music, rap and even salsa. Meet Mayra Sanchez here.
Anto ≤3
The career of María Antonia Broderick, Anto <3, is a pleasant accident. In her converge the acceleration of the new millennium and chaotic phenomena meeting. Her music is a probe, an attempt to understand chaos using chaos itself as a method. In 2023 Anto <3 released Encryptedan EP with four songs in which trap, perreo and techno with textures of the plug, the glitch and the detroit. The EP was a follow-up to their first single Regañada (2022). The single defined his sonic quest: fleeting bars full of dramas, desire and street scenes. An avant-garde proposal that corresponds to his life but exceeds it. This is Anto's story.
Gato e' Monte
Gato e' Monte was born and raised in Bogotá, the capital of Colombia. A cold, gray and tumultuous city, where the musical scenes of the regions of the country and the world converge. The music he grew up with, punk and rock, he says, responded to another era, another city and other contexts. So he investigated the sounds of the countryside and his response to this problem of identity was to create his own instrument: "l chiflamero", a bandola with a larger body and eight strings in total. Its name comes from "los chiflamicas", as it was called to the wandering and drunken musicians of Bogota in the 19th century. His music is also a costumbrist narration of his life in the city; in his family's roast chicken business, at the stadium cheering for his team. This is the story of Gato e' monte.
CUBA
By Magazine AM:PM
If someone walks the streets of Cuba today, he or she would wonder where the many genres of Cuban popular music have gone. From bar to bar, from house to house, from horn to horn, only one rhythm is heard: the cast, that local contribution to Latin urban sounds which consolidated its empire in 2023 and has begun to expand beyond our borders. But if you pay enough attention, you will be able to notice in certain corners some small revolts. Daughter of these times, an alternative scene is beginning to emerge that drinks from everywhere but risks defining its own sound identity. The three Cuban artists that we highlight are still at the beginning of their respective careers, but the potential that we find in their proposals make us feel very optimistic about the paths that this new scene can trace.
Chezca Zana
Imbuing the cast with the sloppy aesthetics of punk, the shitpost and the trashhave made Chezca Zana the best student of that mass of young urban artists known as "the new". The zeitgeist has whispered a couple of things in Daniel Sánchez Carrazana's ear, and he has taken note. The reward? A growing and heterogeneous fanbaseand the admiration of other musicians, both from the underground as well as more established ones. Meanwhile, for him, the hate and incomprehension are nothing more than barks warning of their passing. Just watch videos of his concerts, the stories of fans chanting his songs and the controversies he has inspired. He has stirred the hornet's nest and connected with the public, and that, without a doubt, is not something most of his contemporaries can boast of.
EIDI
EIDI is a young MC from Havana whose music moves through trap, hip hop and is not afraid to flirt with pop sounds. Constant renovation seems to be one of his signs; with each proposal we see him trying on different clothes, as if he were still finding the tone in which he is most comfortable, or perhaps this mutant condition is simply a side effect of his philosophy studies. His multifaceted discourse avoids being pigeonholed into a single theme, and we can find him talking about self-love as well as existentialism, or the challenges of making hip hop in a country where the genre has historically moved between outright censorship or commercial disinterest.
Charly Siaba
Charly Siaba is essentially a voice nesting in a guitar. His training, between academic and self-taught, has given him the skill as an instrumentalist, but it is his sensitivity that makes him a particularly interesting singer-songwriter within the Cuban musical panorama. After several years outside the island, his aesthetic has acquired influences from funk, the country, the soul and pop; however, he maintains a key connection with traditional music, even family heritage, and with jazz fused with Afro-Cuban rhythms, a sonority he shares with a generation of great musicians nearby, such as Andy García and Gelín Hau. His latest productions reveal a restless composer, who seeks to connect with his audience, increasingly enthusiastic, in an intimate way, exploiting the possibilities of communication in networks and presentations in small spaces. After the announcement of upcoming releases, Charly Siaba seems to promise us this year the discovery of new and better subtleties for the current Cuban song.
SPAIN
By Sound World
This year, which we have just started, has to be the year of consolidation for the careers of several artists in Spain. We have chosen the three that we think are best placed in the starting grid, taking into account that they are proposals that are in that hopeful initial stage but, even so, they treasure enough quality and tables to not be described as newcomers. Whether they make it later on does not only depend on them. They are not lacking in the right ingredients, of that we are sure.
Carlos Ares
Galician musician and producer Carlos Ares has become the great musical bet of this 2024. His brand-new and recently released album Pilgrim is the perfect combination between the most expansive indie folk and the most intimate contemporary pop. A duality that, in addition, he knows how to exploit like no one else live, where he is accompanied by a band of up to six backing musicians that give his proposal an ideal vitality for the long summer festival nights that await us in a few months.
Lia Kali
The Catalan artist left an excellent taste with the release in March last year of her debut album, but the last two releases suggest that the best is yet to come during this 2024. Just listen to Tastes like purity to realize it. The theme emerged in Norway from the hand of the Granada-born and trusted producer Toni Anzis, with whom he has already worked on several occasions. In addition, in 2024 he starts a tour with more than fifty dates on both sides of the Atlantic that will begin at Lollapalooza Argentina and will end with a whole WiZink Center in Madrid.
Besmaya
Besmaya is a duo from Madrid formed by Javier Echávarri and Javier Ojanguren, who to date have produced a good handful of interesting singles and an EP of the same name, which put them in the spotlight of Sound World. They describe their style as relaxed pop, and the truth is that they combine freshness and self-confidence in equal parts, in an effervescent proposal that is still going to give much more to talk about. Their recent advance together with the most acclaimed Sidonie is proof of this.
MEXICO
By Indie Rocks!
In our section called Good NewsWe have presented for several years all the fresh bets that we have international and national. It has always given us great pleasure to have several options to share with you these brilliant independent discoveries that have shown quality in a short time, within the genres we publish such as rock with its derivatives, electronic, trap, folk and all the fusions that in recent years different artists have created or retaking from the past, giving them a new personality and generating surprises. For now our bets of those Good New releases are:
The Losers
From Xalapa, Veracruz comes the punk and post-rock proposal with the premiere of You call that ROCK?. A material that was released last 2023, after 14 years of history as a project and under the banner of DIY, was produced entirely by the band and Joaquín Pedraza. Their singles have strength, freedom, good vibes and we already want to see them all over Mexico and of course, the world, performing.
Juanpalitoschinos
In the short time of the band's creation, the duo from the capital, formed by Friné Alejo and Joan Page, has quickly positioned itself in the hearts of many listeners with its 80's Japanese City-Pop singles with a touch of Latin American indie. In several presentations in different cities in Mexico the charisma and brilliance of Juanpalitoschinos has been reflected under the care of every detail in their releases and videos. Stay tuned as the band promises to release their debut full-length material this year.
Mirror Revelations
With a revealing debut album (released last year), the band of krautrock psych founded by Alambrera Castillo and Gabriela Alcalá arrives this year to reap the fruits of that solid LP. Their sound incorporates rhythms motorikThe band's music, a continuous and minimalist bass and percussions that, without thinking about it, immediately take you on a mental and sensory journey. Today Samuel Osorio and Angel Arias are performing with the group to complete their live show. Seeing them live will be a fascinating experience.
URUGUAY
Piiila / Kristel Latecki
As has happened in several parts of the world -and we have observed it especially in our Ibero-American coverage-, in Uruguay rock has once again kicked in the door and has made itself heard until it has conquered the emerging spaces, filling them with distortion and pogo. For this 2024 the Montevideo bet is placed right there: in the underground and in the independent movements. And we represent it with three artists who are preparing new and promising material to continue breaking it this year.
Sakeo Flower
Flor Sakeo is no longer a secret of the under Montevideo. In 2023 she was crowned as one of the emerging artists of the year by sheer force of excellent shows, tirelessly touring the stages of the city every weekend, until the end of December opening for Trotsky Vengarán.
Their debut EP Alba was one of the best albums and one of the most pleasant surprises. With five tracks that wander among the stoner and the riffs (and the shagging) of classic and heavy rock, Flor sings about introspective journeys, the forces of nature and crumbling cities. And at the rate she's been going, this year she promises not to stop: by May she plans to release her next single.
Obelisk
Obelisco is a power trio of hardcore punk with a strong melodic and melancholic influence of alternative rock, which has established itself as one of the most energetic and attractive proposals of the under Montevidean. Starting in 2019, they have captured their songs and their different formations in two EPs and an album, with progressive songs that can last up to six minutes, lyrics carried by a cathartic scream and moments of arpeggiated tranquility. This year, betting on sound variety and working with Martín Solana (Hablan Por La Espalda) as producer, they are preparing a new album that they plan to release tentatively in May.
Samuel Acosta
Originally from Maracay, Venezuela, Samuel Acosta began making songs in his room in Uruguay, imbuing them with his observations and experiences (such as suffering the inclemencies of an unstable climate, as he sings in the song "The Weather"). February), and a melancholic sensibility that makes him very Montevidean; so much so that in his bio he defines himself as "indie criollo".
In 2022 he released his first album entitled Sundayframed in a revival of alternative rock of the early 90's with melody and vocals well ahead. He continued to strengthen that sound until he reached IT WON'T BE LONG BEFORE IT HAPPENSfirst, first single of his next work that he is recording with his band Los Colets, which he expects to be released in the middle of this year.
