Where I recommend 10 youtubers in Spanish who speak (and well) about music

In this hyperconnected world, full of informational stimuli, in this era of scrolling and hyperlinks —that is, here and now—, musicians and music students (in most cases surfers of knowledge, as I say admired Alessandro Baricco) have a hard time concentrating in theoretical classes on musical appreciation or analysis, to give just two examples. It's a shame, because in these subjects there are relevant tools not only to understand the music we listen to, but also to understand how this work is going to be perceived by audiences.

Thinking about it, and how interesting some information can be when its broadcasters use new media and narratives, I have decided to make a list of 10 youtubers about music. In the language of Cervantes and each in their own style, they manage to effectively communicate quality knowledge.

There are generalists and there are more focused on specific musical genres or instruments. Some cultivate criticism —sometimes giving tremendous pooch— or review technological tools for music production. There must be many more and there will be others who work from other platforms (Instagram, Tik Tok, etc.).

Doing what they do seems easy; It may give the impression that it is "sewing and singing" as our grandmothers used to say, but nothing is further from the truth. Producing videos with a certain (in)formative desire for the networks entails a whole production, which many times these people start doing with their own resources, putting a lot of desire and heart into it.

In this magazine we want to meet and create an alliance with a youtuber Cuban who wants to do a bit of criticism, history, tutorials or comments on Cuban music, in the form of audiovisuals, just as people like Professor Rayado (Chile) or El Enemy (Colombia) do in their respective countries. If you know someone with this aptitude, please let us know… or let them know that we are looking for them.

Jaime Altozano

It is probably the best known of the youtubers of music in our language. With more than three million subscribers, this Spaniard born in 1993, musician, music producer, is a very cultured guy who also has powerful and fun teaching skills. According to what I have read, he studied at the Arturo Soria Professional Music Conservatory and plays many instruments (clarinet, drums, piano, ukulele, bagpipes); Plus, he sings. The Internet says that he also studied two years of the double degree in Mathematics and Physics at the Complutense University of Madrid and musical production at the Creative Music School. I'm not surprised. His videos, sometimes amazing and with a lot of humor, are multimedia works in which his incredible musical skills are added to the ability to mix all kinds of editing and animation resources to convert music theory lessons or analysis of songs, groups, styles or soundtracks, and even music history episodes, into something fun and super enjoyable. It began by disassembling for the understanding of any mortal the resources used in the composition of the soundtracks of the film sagas Harry Potter and The Lord of the rings, but his consecration —at least as far as I am concerned—, is due to the musical analysis he made of the album The bad wantof Rosalia. For greater use of possible interested parties in following his steps as youtuber, transparent in its website the tools with which you build your posts and (already with payment through its Musihacks platform) it offers courses in Basic Piano, Intermediate Piano and Comprehension of Classical Music. The guy makes dense content look as simple as drinking water. You just announced an evolution on your channel (new set, new audio tools) that should take you—and us—to the next level. FAST SEAT BELTS!

ShaunTrack

Another Spaniard from '93. It is said that music was present from his childhood, until at the age of 12 he got fully into the guitar —“self-taught”, he always clarifies—. At 18 he began to play the piano and take private music theory lessons, until he enrolled in the university career of Teaching in Music Education. Once graduated, he set up his own recording studio where he has produced more than 300 artists of all genres and styles. On his channel he analyzes various musicians and makes covers of songs that interest you to dismantle them in public. It has many followers in Latin America because a large part of its post He has dedicated them to music greats from our continent: Spinetta, Soda Stereo, Cuarteto de Nos, Julio Jaramillo, Juan Luis Guerra; although you will also find those dedicated to bands like Rammstein, Gorillaz, Linkin Park or Artic Monkeys, analyzing the structure of the songs, their chord progression, their arrangements and deconstructing the harmony... without missing the opportunity, from time to time, to play songs news such as Residente's tiradera to J Balvin in the Bizarrap sessions, a post that he took advantage of to review the career of the Argentine producer and DJ. He frequently uses the information that appears on the network of networks about the musicians themselves, without going too deep. A good communicator, fresh and unprejudiced, who works wonders with basic information. His musical group is called The First Million.

Alvinsch

This 34-year-old Colombian, born in Barranquilla and based in Bogotá, defines himself as a musician-psychonaut-youtuber-solarpunk anarchist. He has played various musical instruments since he was a child, as he comes from a family of academic musicians. "I love talking about music and all that, but at the same time (the YouTube channel) was a way to create an audience that would eventually listen to my music...", he has declared. Once inside, he has convinced himself, without stopping making music, that what he does on this platform is also art and will be recognized as such in a few decades. In his channel he dedicates the same posts to argue why he finds the music of Arjona or Romeo Santos infamous (in fact, their first works were called Analyzing Shitty Music), than to open up and tell us his "honest opinion" about musical phenomena such as System of a Down or Metallica, in another series he calls Alvinsch criticizes everything. Has the Sunday podcast Waiting room and also does covers and parodies of great musical quality, especially of various pop and pop rock songs, mainly by Latin American artists. Alvinsch is, in short, a musician, gamer and full-fledged music critic, who uses new languages and constantly gives very interesting tracks and useful tools for colleagues. Do not miss the videos he has made four hands with Altozano.

Music Radar Clan

I am going to use the description that the Spanish Víctor Amorín offers of his own channel, which is very clear. Here you will find "what you probably don't know about the music you listen to". He says that the music he listens to is mainly alternative, electronic and hip hop, but since good music is universal, on his channel he talks about all the genres and styles that he thinks are worth knowing, about incredible stories, artists with exciting lives. and records that changed the world, as well as offering a wealth of information and advice on collecting. I especially like that he has no shame in dealing with sensitive issues such as the use of certain drugs by musicians, the relationship between talent and mental health, and others that are open secrets such as the use of payola. Also, when he feels like it, he gets into more technical topics such as the operation of the needle in vinyl turntables or the review of certain sound equipment. Nothing musical is alien to him; In a general sense, he is someone who is very well informed and an excellent disseminator of topics concerning the history of universal music and the music industry in a broad sense. If you want to know a little more about the musician, music lover and collector what exists under that t-shirt and that black cap, read this interview.

Sergei Rez

DJ, fan of electronic music and teacher of a professional school for DJs (Indigo School). When this Vallesolitan opened his own YouTube channel for the first time, he was only 14 years old. With many followers in Mexico, Colombia and Argentina, as well as in Spain obviously, he usually teaches DJ tricks with his console in sight or dismantles and explains alibis and fragments of other sessions. disc jockeys. He confesses to being a lover of hip hop, black music, R&B and tattoos. He is part of the musical group Superpig, a duo he has with Gonso Rivas; together they make music with “a lot of gear”. His channel is characterized by posts brief (usually less than 10 minutes) that contain tutorials, news, reviews, sets, interviews, miscellaneous stories, trolling musicals or monologues on topics related to electronic music and DJs. Every two weeks he records a kind of newscast for the international electronic circuit. A must for DJs, aspiring or simple lovers of the beats and the consoles.

Areh

He has a "shady" past as a pop star, whose traces seem to have been erased everywhere to the point that I have only been able to find out that he was born on November 2 and... nothing more. He says that he went through many problems with his voice throughout his life, which led him to instruct himself in various techniques, until he found his own way of seeing things, investigating and learning. This handsome former singer who is now a vocal coach and youtuber, before dedicating himself professionally to it, he began to study on his own photography, video-editing, special effects, mixing, mastering, voice recording, sampling, and many other things, which gives an idea of how seriously he takes things. I was amused that he put in the information on his channel: “if you think of me as someone who spends the day surrounded by drawings and photos of the anatomy of the vocal apparatus and the human body, you will be right…”. In other words, it has been like a nerd of voice coaching. He has a lot of analyzes of important singers (don't miss the recent one he did on the singer Nathy Peluso, with whom I couldn't agree more) and others posts dedicated to techniques and tools for singing. But since I'm not going to learn to sing at this point, one of my favorite sections of your channel is When there was no autotune, where a feast is given analyzing voices such as those of Nino Bravo, Javier Solís or Jorge Negrete. It may sound a bit dense at times, but don't be overwhelmed. The man is good at his thing.

Gret Roche

"How about singing people?" This is how they start posts of (finally!) the first woman on this list. singer and voice coach Mexican, originally from the State of Mexico but residing in Toluca, from a young age she delved into acting and dancing in children's programs on Televisa, until landing a dramatic role in the telenovela A light on the road. With the group Garabatos he recorded two music albums for children, at which point he decided to dedicate himself entirely to music. He entered the Toluca Conservatory, where he received piano and classical singing lessons and emerged with the certainty that his was the coaching vocal. His YouTube channel is like a singing school on-line face to face. It is focused on people who love to sing, and you can also find Singing Classes, Music and covers, Video-reactions and much more about the world of singing, vocal warm-up routines or vocal analysis of various singers. Bad Bunny, genius or scam? or The dark side of Kpop are some of the post of this thirtysomething…. but also what is my tone of voice or The truth behind the melismas, between a tidal wave of information completely dedicated to those who want to improve their vocal techniques or conditions, appreciate singing in a more professional way or simply surprise the neighbors with their performances while they cook. Let's see if you get excited...

Carlos Asensio (Live Guitar. The online guitar school)

A native of Seville, Andalusia, Carlos has dedicated his whole life to the guitar. Graduated with honors from the Escuela de Música Moderna de Madrid, he studied classical guitar at the Conservatorio Profesional Francisco Guerrero, has worked with many artists and as a session musician for both records and TV. In 2011, motivated -as he explains- to make learning the guitar from professionals a really accessible thing, he founded the website liveguitar, a true training platform, with courses of various types and levels. He has told in interviews that in 2014, noticing that many of his students asked him for permission to record classes, he decided to do it himself and created the channel on YouTube, which today has more than three million subscribers and playlists such as Music history (with passages on various genres of popular music and its most important followers), dr guitar (very useful, with practical advice to solve a series of problems in the instrument), guitar world (with tutorials and tricks); best guitar riffs, Backing Tracks and much more. Do not stay with the desire to fulfill your dream of playing the melodies of The Beatles by yourself. Yes, it also has this list: beatles on guitar. Carlos is good, and I love his Andalusian accent, sooo cool.

HBD. of everything and rap

Humberto Bejarano Delgado, better known as HBD or DetodoyRap, is a youtuberPeruvian rapper, broadcaster and audiovisual communicator, born in 1995. He graduated in Social Communication at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. With an accountant mother and a lawyer father, since he was a child he was inclined towards music and especially towards rock, metal and hip hop, and although he began to be youtuber in 2012 it was not until 2015 that he created the channel by which the entire Latin rapper community knows him, making a name for himself especially for his fair and neutral analysis of the battles of freestyle. On the channel, he is in charge of spreading the best of Hispanic rap. inside has posts highly visited with lists like The 10 best flows of cockfights and The 10 things you should not do in a rap battle. Contains counters freestyle, battle analysis and Deal with it's. It is probably one of the best channels of the genre and, in my opinion, the best in our language. He has been a judge in several battles and interviewed many high-level rappers and recognition.

The Chombo

Rodney S. Clark, better known as “El Chombo”, is one of the forerunners of reggae music in Spanish. Panamanian based in Florida (United States), he is a businessman, DJ, composer, broadcaster and, for a few years, youtuber. In 2016, he began uploading short 15-second videos on Instagram chatting with his peculiar voice and began to have many followers, so in 2017 he was encouraged to upload longer videos on little-touched topics. The "uncover" was a video that he published that year explaining the meaning of the word dembow, which went viral. As a result, he began to create content related to the history and musical culture of Latin America with the hashtags #TeLoDijoElChombo. By early 2018, his song the little thing (mix) was renamed as give me your little thing and, released by the Ultra Music label, reaching 1TP4Q1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs. In 2019, he began posting his videos on YouTube, where he currently has close to two million subscribers. He puts a lot of humor and animation to his posts and these sometimes answer such crazy questions as Who invented music? or Who names the genres? ¿Does the Illuminati control music?, in addition to dedicating interesting videos to tell the most relevant elements of the musical biography of important artists in our area such as Bob Marley, Joe Arroyo, Frankie Ruiz, Gustavo Cerati, among many, much more.
