I started from the hypothesis that access to the Internet via mobile data could change the forms of consumption of audiovisual products. I defended the comfort of listening to whatever you want whenever you want, and the pleasure of exploring playlist public and share your own. I defended, above all, the vice generated by discovering new music and more new music and living like that, happily, in a loop ex profeso of which even being aware I refuse to leave.

I admit that I was stubbornly romantic, because at the moment the first filter that this type of consumption must pass to gain popularity on the Island is to calculate how many megabytes it deducts from the data package.

One minute of audio in a maximum quality format —which, by the way, It is measured by the amount of kilobytes transmitted in one second (kbps) and not so much because of the format— around 2.5 megabytes of consumption. However, if we are subscribed to free accounts on platforms such as Spotify, we listen to low-quality music (at 24 kbps), which deducts 0.63 megabytes for every 3 minutes. A giga would be enough to play about 1,625 songs.

But still, the streaming in Cuba continues to be at a disadvantage in the face of the almost infinite benefits of the bots on Telegram; especially because when downloading we can listen to the same song 10 times for the same cost/mega consumption.

With this panorama, an application like Sandunga has all the potential to popularize live music —online— in the country.

Sandunga is a national platform for streaming —a project of Artex SA and the export agency Soy Cubano—, and contains exclusively Cuban music. It is his first distinction and his strength. First, because it can concentrate the rich universe that is our music and thereby exploit the sucking capacity that these platforms have. And, furthermore, because, unfortunately, a large part of the catalog of the country's record companies is not available in foreign and larger distributors such as Spotify, Apple Music or Pandora.

However, what should be its strength is today its weakness. Months after its launch, on April 15, 2021, Sandunga's catalog only contains 2,907 songs and 135 videos (most of the latter are video clips, since other categories such as Making of and Concerts remain empty, or with just one video). material).

The catalog is, above all, the database that structures and supports any of these online projects. The interaction of the user depends on it, on which the algorithms for the personalization of the service depend, the formula for the success of these platforms.

The broader the catalog, the more likely it is to attract users and subscribers, which translates into a more profitable business model (always remember that these platforms and networks are or belong, in principle, to commercial companies).

In general, those responsible for feeding the catalogs are the record companies themselves. In the case of Sandunga, not only the Egrem, Colibrí, Bis Music and Abdala contribute, but also the Center for Research and Development of Cuban Music (Cidmuc), the music museum and some artistic representation agencies. By the way, it would be a shame if the directors of the platform did not consider from now on how to provide services to other content providers, such as autonomous collective labels or independent artists, who today produce much of the sound material on the Island.

The income —which at the moment is generated only from subscriptions, and is distributed by the controversial pro rata system, as Spotify and other platforms do—, in the first instance pay an 8% in case of streaming and 10 % if the use is by downloading to the Cuban Agency for Musical Copyright (Acdam). The remaining sum is divided into 70% for content providers —which in turn is broken down according to the number of listens or downloads per theme— and 30% for Soy Cubano, an Artex export agency specializing in the marketing and promotion of cultural products and services. Cubans.

The functionalities according to the type of subscription are another of the success factors of the companies that offer services of streaming. In Sandunga these functionalities are still very limited. For free registrations, for example, it does not allow playing music or video files for more than 40 seconds.

This "stinginess" with the client is not exclusive to Sandunga. Other platforms, such as Apple Music or Tidal, also do not allow the streaming unlimited in its free versions. But they are projects that are aimed at users with an audiophile culture and high purchasing power. In fact, Tidal only contemplates broadcasts in high quality, optimal for playing on professional speakers or headphones.

In Cuba, where the conditions are just being created to try to stimulate an eventual culture of electronic commerce, streaming and other online services—that condition could limit users; even more so when the catalog is not comprehensive enough for them to decide to pay each month for one of the two plans: the basic (49.99 CUP) or the standard (79.99 CUP).

In both, subscribers can listen to music for as long as they want, download 50 (basic) or 80 (standard) content per month, and access promotional discounts.

And although in the standard subscription users can choose the download format, in neither of these two payment methods is the transmission in high quality explicitly offered, which, according to the project itself, is defined at 192 kbps (higher than that of Spotify, which defines it at 160 kbps).

However, we have learned that the Sandunga team has evaluated other more attractive packages, which would be implemented after they close agreements with the Transfermóvil payment gateway (at the moment it only works with EnZona, a certainly less popular platform, after it suffered for of incidents related to the security of its users' data).

To access the platform, the Lombao Estudios group, which was in charge of programming and its design, developed a web version and an application. The first is accessible from any browser, from a mobile phone to a computer. Although it is necessary to clarify that there seem to be compatibility problems with browsers for Apple devices (not only Safari, but also Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Opera). Audio files do not play, but video files do.

The application is available on the website itself and in the repository of apps nationals apklis. To install itself, it requests permission to access your photos and multimedia files, the latter something common in this type of product, and necessary —in the case of files— to proceed with the downloads. But access to the photos is not justified, nor is the mandatory permission to install the app, because if the user denies or rejects it, the application does not work. It does not advance beyond the presentation. And once installed, it generates continuous error messages at registration time.

According to their Privacy policies, the Sandunga team collects non-personal information from its visitors, and personal information from its subscribed users (including name, address, invoice, payment methods, and associated third-party accounts, such as PayPal, Google or Facebook). The project is committed to the correct use of that personal information “in compliance with data privacy laws”.

In Cuba, where Sandunga and his web domain are located, the specific legislation on the protection of personal data is still non-existent, beyond the general approach of article 97 of the 2019 Constitution. In Decree Law 370 on the Computerization of Society, only six articles loosely related to the topic. None of them regulate the proper use of user data, nor the rights to their privacy, nor the mechanisms for reporting violations.

For this reason, the development team took as a reference a Spanish regulation, Organic Law 3/2018 on the Protection of Personal Data and guarantee of digital rights, which applies to the drafting of policies, but obviously not to the responsibilities and legal consequences of the same, because they are outside the scope of their jurisdiction. The reference, they tell us, will remain until the approval of the Consumer Protection Law in the Cuban digital environment, which apparently is currently in the process of being developed.

Sandunga is thus a project under construction. Its evolution should imply the deployment of a broader catalogue, and create opportunities for the personalization of the service, starting from finding a way to know which genres and artists users prefer and recommending them playlists created specifically for them.

It would also involve detailing the metadata needed to feed the algorithms, the key system that generates the almost infinite loop of personalized recommendations. The algorithms also allow the user to easily find the same file in different ways (another of the current disadvantages).

The platform depends on this essential evolution to position itself among the current distributors of audiovisual content in the country —where the Weekly Package, the USB copy and the bots from Telegram continue to be significant competition—; and to establish, once and for all, successful experiences in the consumption of music in and from Cuba. Hopefully with Sandunga it will finally be possible to reach, if not above, at least at the level of what the Cuban music lover wants and needs.

Sandunga is a national streaming platform —a project of Artex SA and the export agency Soy Cubano—, and contains exclusively Cuban music.
