In those days I was coordinating the opening of the Music Museum in Santiago de Cuba. I had proposed to interview several of those characters that make with their existence the living history of music in the city, and to whom in many cases the everyday life and a certain dose of habit are in charge of giving them a common appearance too much. Only a month and a few days had passed since the meeting with maestro Inaudis Paisán Mallet, when on August 28, 2014, the news of his death arrived. It was not an omen, even during the appointment we came to tease each other about the possibility. Who does not get used to ailments? One always thinks that the old will be with you a while longer.

A decade after my first and only occasion so close to Paisán, I take this opportunity to share what was probably the last interview he gave and, by the way, this serves as a tribute to the memory of a great man.

Concerns

The older man lives with his daughter, who in addition to taking care of the medicine and food schedules, is also a sort of family executor. By telephone both agreed to open suitcases, rummage through documents and everything that would contribute to the dissemination of the work and the funds of the nascent museum.

"Yes, I'm going to help you, what's your name, but look, I'm alive, I'm not dead". We both burst out laughing. The meeting was arranged for Monday, July 21, 2014, at 10:00 a.m.

"You ask, everyone knows my dad around here," Marta assures me three days after meeting one of the founding trumpet players of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Oriente in 1962, also a member of the legendary Chepin-Chovén orchestra. From classical to popular, or vice versa, these men used to be great in all fields.

In El Distrito I had no friends or enemies. But a native inhabitant and defender of the area had already explained the route to me. "Where is the shoppingI ask. I follow the street in a straight line, I walk a little and there are the buildings R. 14. I have already said that it was July, there is no need to describe the weather. It is the last floor of five, the door is ajar, I knock.

Photo: Taken from the wall of Inaudis Paisán Jr.

The conversation

"I was born on August 17, 1930, but I was enrolled two years later, in 1932. At the age of five I began my studies in a paid school, from there I went to school number 5 in Moncada between Trinidad and San Germán. Then I was transferred to the Romero High School, in Carnicería, where I attended high school. All this happened in parallel to music".

My interlocutor pauses, looks at some archive of those early years.

"I began my musical studies with my father Juan Paisán y Mallet, who played the saxophone and clarinet. He was a musician in the municipal band, in the orchestras La Caribe and the emblematic Mercerón orchestra," he tells me, while his daughter rummages through his father's archive, bringing photos, awards, sheet music, and a guayabera that he often wore during performances with La Estudiantina Invasora.

The nurse arrives. The old man's blood pressure needs to be checked because of age. Our conversation was guarded by his children Marta and Tomás. Shortly after, one of the grandchildren came by, and also Inaudy Paisán, the descendant, director of the Sonora Huracán orchestra. The younger brother arrives from the town of El Cobre. The family reunion is nothing extraordinary, it is the usual.

We are still in shock to the memory.

Although much of his musical training was self-taught, after the death of his father in 1946, Inaudis continued his education with perseverance. It was not until 1986, when he was a member of the Sinfónica de Oriente, that he obtained the intermediate level degree in music, which is required of all its members.

Although he was a member of several groups, it was the Chepin-Chovén orchestra that would mark his popular career:

"I was a member of Chepín y su Orquesta Gigante, with which I recorded numbers such as Golden wedding anniversary, El Platanal de Bartolo, Black Diamond, Queen Elizabethamong other popular pieces. In 1972, Chepin and Chovén joined again, I left the Sinfónica de Oriente to join the orchestra again. However, I returned to the orchestra five years later, when it was conducted by Maestro Enrique Castro".

We are surprised by the fumigation and we sit in the hallway outside the apartments. Paisán takes the opportunity to mention to me his integration to the Municipal Band, and to the Rebel Army Band in 1959. His descendants show me awards such as the Medal for National Culture, the Jesús Menéndez, the Raúl Gómez García, the José Martí distinction, the Lázaro Peña medal, the José María Heredia plaque, among many other recognitions. I have in front of me an exceptional old man, who lives on a fifth floor, where it is difficult to climb the years.

In 1991 Inaudis Paisán Mallet became director of the Estudiantina Invasora, until his retirement in 2013. He reminds me that the Estudiantina was born on February 24, 1927 and its directors were Luis and Manuel Varela, Pedro Fernández, Roberto Nápoles, until he assumed the responsibility. When Paisán took over the direction he worked with the format of a tres, two guitars, two singers in charge of the güiro and maracas, a timbal, double bass and a trumpet. During this period the group made recordings with the Magic Music and Egrem labels.

Of his work as a composer, Paisán lists the following danzones Mayarí up, Magalis, Belkis, Yaquelin, Yamila and Yamilé, Veracruzana. Similar importance is attached to Katerine, Monica, Esmilda, Claramina, Descarga en el Monte, En el tiempo, Konacli and Milurgy for a flutist, Dedicated to his friend Enrique Navarro, flutist of the Sinfónica de Oriente.

Back

The old man smiles the weariness of the years, the family bids me farewell.

I already know the way. I board one of those vans that are so common in these parts, it is a miracle to take a seat. A downpour breaks, I mentally review the morning lived, I guard with zeal the bag where the guayabera that Paisán and his offspring decided to deliver to the Museum of Music in the city of Santiago, at that time in constructive and museographic conception.

I could not write in one go, it was necessary to put my emotions at rest. Perhaps I also reproached myself for not holding this meeting earlier. Inaudis' trumpet is in the son santiaguero, in the legacy to the Symphony, the Estudiantina, in my ears, in the ears of those who were his disciples, in the people who listen to him and do not always know that this sound carries a name.

The last days of August surprised with the silence to the chords of Paisán. I stood guard of honor at his coffin together with musicians and people of the culture and the musical environment, however I believe that my best tribute is made by dusting off these lyrics that narrate the journey of this music lover to the encounter with one of those gentlemen before whose memory we will always have to take off our hats.

"You ask, everyone knows my dad around here," Marta assures me three days after meeting one of the founding trumpet players of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Oriente in 1962, also a member of the legendary Chepin-Chovén orchestra.

[598
11152,1031,90,11151
10494
post-23066","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-entrevistas","tag-inaudis-paisan","tag-musica-tradicional-cubana","tag-santiago-de-cuba","tag-trompetistas-cubanos
["GET
