And maybe both, because it contains something that every good artist should, at any risk, offer: versatility. Hamilton de Holanda and Gonzalo Rubalcaba worked together in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irm\u00e3 de Leon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samurai,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released by the Brazilian in 2023, and this time they bring a repertoire of incredible elasticity that pays homage to both classic and contemporary themes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The instrumental version of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incompatibility of G\u00eanios<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">operture<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is completely intentional and a preview of what we will hear next. In the almost eight minutes, Rubalcaba evokes his remote nights at Jazz Plaza in 1986 -when he recorded with the legend of the genre Dizzy Gillespie-, while De Holanda shines as a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">modern day<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chor\u00f5e<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The song is an original by Jo\u00e3o Bosco and shows the talent of both for cover versions, which is the backbone of this album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blues Lundvall <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(a tribute to the former president of Blue Note Records and Rubalcaba's \"discoverer\") and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mandalagh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be said to be sisters in sound. While the first one is the result of a duo that equals the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">big band <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in dexterity; the second is reflected more in the temperamental smoothness of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cool jazz<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They have their differences, but both are the storm before the calm; they foretell the dialectic of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yolanda Anas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the iconic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concert<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Rubalcaba. Rubalcaba has been causing sighs in the national repertoires for years, and the addition of the Brazilian to the equation is both a surprise and a complete success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back to the living room, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flying Chicken<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is heir to the distant <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bebop<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It takes off like a chase anthem, in the style of Chaplin's frenetic comedies. The most remarkable thing is that, although it drops a few tones, it doesn't slump. Not even to take a breath. We witness the epic of two masters who know how to maintain the tension and the movement based on punctual syncopations, creating the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">groove<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that we like so much. This is one of the most generous pieces in volume on the LP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"youtube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Oblx53Ij57E?si=2YQi7dgIK327VJfz\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">silence<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the perfect antithesis; it falls like the disconsolate dialogue of an outsider who does not wish to attract attention. Rubalcaba's piano opens up, to couple with the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ipso facto<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by De Holanda. They build a trepid saudade based on strings and perhaps, because of its virtuosic minimalism, it is one of the most distinguishable songs. Photos by Dani Gurgel.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">J\u00f5ao Gilberto's latent inspiration in De Holanda is shattering; it's like listening to the raw instrument before the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bossa Nova<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This translates into <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a version of the original performed by Stevie Wonder on his 1973 album, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Innervisions<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It began with a dialogue and between its lines we heard: \"Todo est\u00e1 bien ch\u00e9vere\", which could be the general vision and concept of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collab<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The version also features the harmonica of the young Brazilian master Gabriel Grossi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choro Fado<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the constructions that materializes the innate ambition of the project. As if there were not enough subgenres and plots, Rubalcaba delights with a kind of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">jazz fussion<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mixing his traditional piano -from the lineage of Lecuona- in a back-and-forth with the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choro<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by De Holanda. What begins as a ghostly enchantment, becomes a polyrhythmic pull. It is these challenges to stylistic barriers that showcase the musical vocabulary of both.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"youtube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/demtQeqDyJg?si=gM9iZH1ZAD3t4xrq\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The presence of Jo\u00e3o Bosco in his <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incompatibility of G\u00eanios<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an excellent and timely inclusion of vocals on the album. Photos by Dani Gurgel.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transparence<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> retains a truly moving undertone. With the company of the great Charlie Haden, the original version was recorded live at the Blue Note Jazz Club in Tokyo in March 2005. However, Rubalcaba was not able to release it until 2015, months after the death of his partner. It is a revisit to the albums <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tokyo Adagio<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charlie<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2015), both in tribute to the American bassist. Rubalcaba's hands, watched over by the carioca, look for a perfect <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legato<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carrying wreaths to Haden's bedside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last ballad is masterful, along with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flying Chicken<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">silence<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choro Fado<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deserves to be listened to meticulously and on several occasions. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saudade, Saudade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> version of the coda with which MARO represented Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022, where it finished in ninth place. The new interpretation walks counterclockwise. For, above all the experimentation, there is a unifying style that makes each piece feel like a room in a house, with De Holanda's bandol\u00edn serving as a guide.
