Most Popular in Magazine AM: PM in 2020
2020, a cursed year where they exist, forced us to lock ourselves in our homes and move the office to a remote office on WhatsApp. However, they say it is good to turn the setback into victory, so these last 12 months made us grow as a publication.
From the virtual universe we coordinate reviews, interviews, playlists, articles and reports; we gave birth to the podcast The AM: PM cassettes; we dreamed of the broken record column and we released a new, more beautiful and functional design on our website. To celebrate these achievements, today we share the 10 materials that caused the most interest among the community of music lovers who visited the site in 2020:
CONSULTING ROOM: IS IT LAWFUL TO USE A FRAGMENT OF OTHER PEOPLE'S WORK IN THE OWN WORK WITHOUT PERMIT?
The controversy caused by the song published by Orishas and Beatriz Luengo (Ojalá pasa) that included a fragment of the mythical Ojalá, by Silvio Rodríguez, led Darsi Fernández to write one of his always well-received consultancies on copyright infringements. We are happy to know that this section is very popular within our readers community. Sad news for Cuban music (one of many): Daniel Muñoz (El Dany) passed away on July 18 and the commotion left Cayo Hueso, spread through the reggaeton acolytes and reached our team. Therefore, we are grateful for this text by Raúl Medina as a tribute to the “toughest”, the fallen hero of a generation.
La partida de “El más duro"
Sad news for Cuban music (one of many): Daniel Muñoz (El Dany) passed away on July 18 and the commotion left Cayo Hueso, spread through the reggaeton acolytes and reached our team. Therefore, we are grateful for this text by Raúl Medina as a tribute to the “toughest”, the fallen hero of a generation.
The ecosystem of Cuban music through 20 women names
Lists are always controversial and every time we decide to make one, our Editorial Board faces a difficult task. This one, which includes a score of powerful women in the Cuban music ecosystem, was no exception.
Gender violence in show production: changing the game's rules
Gender violence in the production of shows in Cuba was an issue that we had wanted to address for a long time. Luckily Amalia Rojas arrived with this text as intimate as it was valuable, which she made us reflect on and (re) know that the dangers to women in the music industry are still there.
Discos y singles que marcaron los últimos 20 años de la música cubana
If the invitation from Vistar magazine had not existed, we would not have thrown ourselves into thinking about those 20 albums and singles that somehow marked the last 20 years of Cuban music. We already said it, our readers are fans of the lists.
This morning again think of you
Santiago Feliú is a soul that inhabits the hearts of those who make Magazine AM: PM. That this chronicle sneaks into the most widely read of the year gives us a certainty: Santi has not gone far. His poetry, wit and irreverent spirit are still with us.
Danay Suárez, under the influence of God and nature
In an early February, when we still did not imagine that COVID-19 would prevent Danay Suárez from enjoying at Havana World Music, our director Rafa G. Escalona interviewed the artist whose work transcends rap and who in these lines reveals the mechanisms of his art.
Maykel Blanco and Salsa Mayor: "And after add it songo"
If popular Cuban dance music is discussed in this magazine, then Rafael Valdivia has the floor. On this occasion, his dialogue with Maykel Blanco ran from the rhythmic cells of the songo to the orchestral approach of Salsa Mayor.
Cuban albums of 2019 (chosen by critics)
Cuban records of the year (in this case, 2019) once again stole the attention of those who read us. Once again, a group of experts and music lovers sent us their favorite albums that were, later, the starting point for this (another) list that we were proud to publish. Good thing you keep finding adepts!
Playlist < / i> : Songs to turn the world
Only the magic of Daymé Arocena could make a playlist like this possible, full of the musical discoveries of the Cuban singer and songwriter during her years of touring the world.
As curious notes to this compilation, we must say that the confusion of Anglo-Saxon readers after the death of Diego Maradona, led to searches for the tag "Madonna dead" within the site soaring, so the text of Norge Espinosa that celebrates 60 years of the queen of pop was positioned in the first seat of this list, although we decided not to include it because it was not published in 2020. Also, among the 10 materials there was also the precursor text of the consultation on what to do to study music in Cuba, which we do not include for the same reason.
Other works we recommend:
Cuban music magazine, without distinctions of genres or geographies.
