Fundación SGAE announces the V Tete Montoliu Jazz Competition

The Sociedad General de Autores y Editores (SGAE), as a foundation that promotes cultural projects, announces the V Concurso SGAE para obras de jazz Tete Montoliu 2024-2025, with the purpose of stimulating and recognizing the creation of composers of this genre.

According to a note published in the official website According to the organizing institution, the final phase will be held in two concerts to be held on November 7 and 8 at the Teatro Central in Seville, as part of the Jazz Cycle that will take place during that month at the venue, whose specialized programming in the genre spans more than 25 years of history.

Works of any jazz subgenre may be submitted, as long as they are original and unpublished and created by one or more composers who are members of the SGAE. They must also be composed for soloist, duo, trio or quartet and with a free combination of the following instruments: piano (one player), acoustic double bass or electric bass (one player), drums (one player), guitar, saxophone, trumpet, trombone and voice. The duration of the compositions may not be less than four minutes or more than seven minutes.

The contest will award the best works, with the gift of up to four prizes, valued at a total of 11,700 euros. The deadline for receipt of scores will remain open until September 2, 2024.

In the IV edition of this contest, in 2021, the Cuban composer and drummer Ruy Adrián López-Nussa won the prize with the piece To Lylean ode in memory of jazz master Lyle Mays.

Founded in 1999, the Tete Montoliu Jazz Competition pays tribute to one of the fundamental figures of the genre in Spain. Previous editions have recognized the talent of other Cuban musicians such as Alain Pérez and Ernán López-Nussa.
