Illustration: Pepe Menéndez. From Roots to Fusion —Episode 8
We are back across the Atlantic in this eighth episode. We are witnessing the moment when Bebop musicians' frustration—with continued racial discrimination and the fact that white West Coast musicians had once again usurped their African-rooted music—spurred them to modify and, in a way, purify their own music. They thus traveled towards new styles such as Hard Bop, which required more soul what magic, a sound that pointed the way to funky-jazz a decade later.
Also appearing in this installment are the jazz standards, the play-along, and jazz schools, where the most famous of these institutions was—and still is—Boston's Berklee College of Music, which annually graduates dozens of highly competent jazz performers.
